An egg a day keeps the doctor away!

In a recent study, reported on by The Daily Mail online, it was found that egg whites could lower the blood pressure dramatically in the same way as medication- but without the side effects!

A key element found in the whites was found to have the same blood pressure lowering abilities as Captopril, a high blood-pressure drug.

Dr Zhipeng Yu, who led the research at China's Jilin University, said: 'Our research suggests that there may be another reason to call it 'the incredible, edible egg'.

'We have evidence from the laboratory that a substance in egg white - it's a peptide, one of the building blocks of proteins - reduces blood pressure about as much as a low dose of Captopril, a high-blood-pressure drug.'

Dr Yu and his colleagues studied a peptide found in egg white called RVPSL.
This has a powerful ability to inhibit or block the action of ACE, a substance produced in the body that raises blood pressure.

The findings were presented to the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in New Orleans.

Dr Yu said: 'Our results support and enhance previous findings on this topic.
'They were promising enough to move ahead with further research on the effects of the egg white peptide on human health.'

High blood pressure often goes undiagnosed and can cause severe damage to your organs, leading to serious health problems- and in a lot of cases there are no symptoms until it is too late.

Thieves run up over £21,000 bill in a matter of hours on a stolen mobile phone!

The Daily Mail recently reported that a young woman who had her phone stolen while on holiday was shocked to find that in only the few hours before noticing that her phone was gone, the thieves had run up a phone bill for over £21,000!

Georgia Harris' phone was stolen in Barcelona and while she was in the air on her way back to Britain the thieves racked up a £21,000 bill, making premium rate international calls.

As soon as she realised her phone had been stolen, she immediately called police and her phone company to report the theft and visited a store a few hours later to pick up a replacement.

She discovered the thief’s abuse of her account when Vodafone staff informed her that it had been suspended for ‘suspicious activity’.

They revealed her service had been stopped when the bill totalled £21,183.82.
Records show the thief had used the phone for several conference calls to premium rate international numbers from 7.52am on the day it was lost.

‘I didn't think it was possible to run up such a huge bill. It is the size of a house deposit.’ Miss Harris told the Daily Mail.

Miss Harris was shocked when Vodafone customer services insisted that she was responsible for the bill, saying the company should have suspended the account earlier.

Vodafone initially offered to reduce Miss Harris' bill by £1,500 as a ‘goodwill gesture’ - leaving her to pay more than £19,500, but after investigation a the company said that all fees to her account will be waived.

A spokesman told the Daily Mail: ‘This is a very unusual case. Normally, the customer is liable for any charges up to the point they report their phone lost or stolen.
‘However, this phone seems to have been used as part of a deliberate and organised crime which we will be investigating.
‘In this case, we will waive all of the charges raised by this fraud.
‘It's worth remembering how important it is to keep your phone safe, and get in touch with us as soon as you suspect it's missing.’

As mobile phone thefts become more common and thieves become sophisticated and organised, you may be wandering what you can do to protect your phone (and your bank account!)

This Mi-Zone 2-way proximity alarm works with your handset or tablet and can be attached to anything you consider valuable or worth protecting. Just keep your Mi-Zone tag by your side or in your pocket, and it will alert you when your handset or tablet is moved away from you.  You can also use it to locate missing handset/tablet by pressing the button on the tag for 10 seconds and, as long as it is in range, the alert will activate on your phone or tablet allowing you to pinpoint its exact location.

How to burn off the excesses of Easter!

After a long Easter weekend of roast dinners and more chocolate than you would usually eat in a year, you may be feeling a bit lethargic and bloated. With the summer just around the corner it is time to burn off those Easter eggs and shake yourself out of this sugar slump!

Start slowly if you are not used to doing a lot of exercise. The last thing that you want to do is injure yourself on the first day of your fitness kick and end up in bed for a week! Start by incorporating exercise into your everyday life. Exercise doesn’t have to mean jumping jacks and sprinting- anything that raises your heart rate above its normal pace for a sustained period of time will help with your overall fitness. Small bursts of exercise throughout the day will also help to increase your metabolism and get that chocolate bunny-bulge burning!

Try parking further away from your office or get off the bus a stop early and incorporate some brisk walking into your daily commute. Take the stairs not the escalator or lift and instead of browsing the internet in your lunch break, take a little walk around a local park. You could even try and get a few of your colleagues together and start a walking club, or do a quick exercise video in an empty office. Not only is exercise good for your body, but it has also been proven to have a positive effect on your mental state. Doing some exercise in the middle of your workday could help you to be less stressed and more productive too! It’s a win-win situation!

If you need a bit more motivation, you should invest in the Fitbit Ultra. This clever little gadget records your exercise all day and uploads it wirelessly to your smart device. Using a free app you can record how much exercise you do on a daily basis, how many calories burned and consumed and track your overall progress. You can even get advice and support from an online community who will encourage you to achieve your goals and keep you motivated!

'Two strikes and your out!' says top police chief on using your mobile phone while driving

According to Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, one of Britain’s most senior police chief, drivers who have been caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel of their car should have their licences removed.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe told the Daily Mail that he was deeply concerned by the thousands of people who continue to use their phones while driving despite the clear laws and penalties. He has said that the number of penalty points received for the offence should be increased from 3 to 6- meaning that drivers would have their licence revoked were they to be caught twice in the space of 3 years.

He told the Daily Mail: ‘I have to say I have still got an issue around mobile phone usage myself. I think it is still very high when people are driving. If I was able tomorrow, I would say you get six points for driving while using a phone.
‘The problem at the moment is we are dishing out lots of tickets, somebody gets three points and they have got another three chances.
‘I would say you have got two chances. You have had a mobile phone infraction and if you do it again you lose your licence.'

To avoid these penalties you should install a hands free device in your car and only use it when you feel it is appropriate and when talking while driving will not impair your concentration.

This Visor GoBluetooth hands free car kit from Supertooth (£49.99) features voice control so you can pick up your calls without taking your eyes off the road.
The auto-connect feature recognises your paired handset whenever in range and can pair 8 handsets simultaneously.   This portable visor solution is fully transportable and can be used in any vehicle, office or home as a loud speaker.
