Bar Rafaeli walks the catwalk with... an iphone

The Daily Mail reported yesterday on a rather peculiar catwalk styling…

Bar Rafaeli, the 27-year-old model of the moment walked the catwalk earlier in the week for Spanish brand, Desigual – fronting their Autumn/Winter ‘We Love’ collection. She wore their bold designs in the colours of the season, accessorised with an iphone… in a pink plastic case.

The model looked bemused as she toted the phone up and down the catwalk. It seemed to be a last minute styling decision as the phone did not even coordinate with the Autumnal pallet of the collection and in all honesty, just looked rather odd!

In fact, it is not as random an idea for a catwalk show as one might initially think- Phone cases and covers are becoming the new ‘must have accessory’. With people spending hundreds of pounds on smart phones, consumers are now investing in higher quality cases that match their lifestyles. Just as your bag, briefcase or shoes can say a lot about you- so can your phone case! Looking at Bar Rafaeli’s face- she clearly already knows this!

Had the designers invested in a premium Italian leather cover, like the Fenice Cima (£99) in on-trend brown, then perhaps Bar’s face would have told a different story!

Change your life with a video baby monitor

As any parent will tell you, a baby monitor is an indispensable piece of kit for providing peace of mind and the freedom to move out of earshot of your little one. Over the last few years improvements in the technology available to baby monitor manufacturers have made it ever easier to keep an eye on your baby with high tech monitors. But more than just being able to hear your baby when they cry or wake up, a video monitor can actually improve your life- and most importantly your relationship with your little one, in ways that you have probably never considered…

With a state of the art video monitor you can connect your smartphone, computer or tablet to the monitors video feed. This allows you to see a live video feed of your baby wherever you are. This is especially important for parents who work away and don’t want to miss out on their little ones milestones. You can even take snapshots throughout the day- so you never miss out on cherished memories.

You can use your video monitor to keep an eye on older children while they do their homework or play while you see to the baby.

Video monitors with two-way audio allows you to comfort toddlers while they get used to sleeping alone without being in the same room. Sometimes all they need is a soothing word and a bit of reassurance that you are nearby!

A video monitor allows you to watch your children while they are ill so that you can get to them quickly should they need you in a hurry. You will be able to see if they get out of bed or are distressed in any way- sometimes just the reassurance that you are watching is enough to comfort them.

As any new parent will know, it is hard to resist going to check on your baby every five minutes- just to make sure they are still okay. With a video monitor you can check on them without the risk of waking them up!

If you are looking for a premium video monitor then the iHealth Baby Monitor offers everything that you could possibly want in a baby monitor.

It transfers your baby's image and sound to up to 4 iOS devices simultaneously whenever you can connect to internet.  A rotatable lens gives you a 360% horizontal and 150% vertical visual angle that can be controlled by simply sweeping your iOS device, so if your baby moves out of the camera eye you easily reposition it. It also offers you 2-way audio and 1-way video connection and alerts you automatically when baby is crying or moving. The peace of mind that comes with being able to see your baby 24 hours a day is invaluable!

How to stay safe in the snow

The snow is coming down thick and fast all over the UK and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop any time soon! So what can you do to make sure that you and your loved ones stay safe during this extreme weather?

Firstly, it is important to stay informed, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and take action on any severe weather warning or advice that is given. There are a lot of weather apps available for your mobile devices, the Met Office have apps for Android or Apple devices and will help you stay on top of the weather changes as they happen.

Always leave extra time for your journeys during periods of extreme weather. Check that public transport is still running before you leave the house to avoid getting stranded outside in the cold!

If you drive, you should plan your route and leave extra time to ensure you are not rushing and drive safely in accordance with the condition of the road. The Highways Agency suggests that you keep an emergency kit in your car over the winter months. This includes:

·                Ice scraper and de-icer
·                Warm clothes and blankets — for you and all passengers
·                Torch and spare batteries - or a wind-up torch
·                Boots
·                First aid kit
·                Jump leads
·                A shovel
·                Road atlas
·                Sunglasses (the glare off snow can be dazzling).

In addition, when setting out on journeys during the winter season remember to take with you:
·                Food and a thermos with a hot drink
·                Any medication you, or other people travelling with you, need to take regularly.

It is also important to remember that heaters, windscreen wipers and difficult driving conditions will all have an impact on your cars battery life. To avoid draining your battery and getting stranded in an emergency, it is a good idea to carry an emergency battery booster for your phone so you will never be caught out with a flat battery! This Universal Emergency Barrel Charger is not only great value, for only £4.99 but could be a lifesaver in an emergency. Simply connect your phone and talk whilst charging. It includes a range of tips for use with most handsets, including MicroUSB and powers up your phone so that it has up to 2.5 hours of talk time, all from one AA battery.  Keep a couple of spare AA batteries in your glove box and you will never be caught without battery again!

Phone theft on the rise - Don't be a victim!

The Daily Mail reported recently on a video that has been released of a victim having their phone snatched from their hand by a hooded mugger on a bike.

The incident happened in Islington in June and it took a matter of seconds for the opportunistic criminal to grab the phone and disappear before the victim even knew what had happened.

New figures show a total of 9,751 mobiles were stolen in thefts or robberies last month - a 64 per cent rise on the number stolen in the capital in December three years ago.
In December 2009 there were 5,915 offences and in December 2010, there were 8,078 offences committed.

Scotland Yard has launched a new advertising campaign to warn Londoners of the risks of phone and jewellery snatches.
They want to alert the public to the fact that thieves are often just opportunists. One advert showing a mobile phone reads: 'I see easy cash so I run up to him and grab it from his hand',

Police say they are dealing with a 20 per cent increase in the number of snatches and thefts of mobile phones in London - around half of all phones stolen are Apple iPhones.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Letchford, the crime lead for the Met's street policing operation, said: 'We're trying to make people think differently with this campaign - having your personal possessions on show gives robbers a chance to make easy money.’

He added: 'Just being conscious of where you are and being careful about when you display your valuables can help you avoid being targeted. '

It is thought that the stolen phones are then sold in batches abroad or on sites such as Ebay and Gumtree.
In London police have even been issued with iPads so they can use satellite-tracking apps to trace stolen handsets.

It is important to stay aware of your surroundings at all times. If you are texting or focused on your phone it is easy to miss any warning signs that you are in danger.  Try not to use your phone while you are walking around, especially in busy areas or by the side of the road. Thieves are opportunists- so don’t give them the opportunity!

Your phone should be password protected; and always make sure that you log out of online accounts such as your email and Facebook.

It is also a good idea to invest in an alarm that will alert you if someone tries to remove your phone from your person without you realising- this is especially usefull if you commute and are travelling on a busy train everyday. One in six of those who have had a phone stolen say it was taken from their bag or pocket. Make it difficult for thieves to remove your phone from your person with the Mi-Zone 2-way proximity alarm.  The Mi-Zone works with your handset or tablet and can be attached to anything you consider valuable or worth protecting. You can choose from 3 security settings: Low, medium and high, depending on the range of the security zone you wish to create and as soon as your belongings move outside of the selected zone, a flashing alert and audio alarm will be activated on your screen. Just keep your Mi-Zone tag by your side or in your pocket, and it will alert you when your handset or tablet is moved away from you.  You can also use it to locate missing handset/tablet by pressing the button on the tag for 10 seconds and, as long as it is in range, the alert will activate on your phone or tablet allowing you to pinpoint its exact location

The snow is here and whilst it looks beautifully wintery, like sugar has been sprinkled over the trees and houses, it is also causing havoc on our roads and public transport systems. It is only a matter of time before schools have to shut and the kids have that much anticipated freedom of the ’Snow Day’.

Three easy ways to stay on track with your New Year weight loss!

It is only two weeks into 2013 and already your resolution to kick-start the New Year by dropping a few pounds has gone to pot! The left-over’s of the Christmas feasting- chocolates and rich cakes, are still there to tempt us and this cold grey weather doesn’t help with our motivation to leave the house and do a bit of exercise.

It is easy to beat ourselves up over our lack of willpower but there is really no need. Most people fail in their attempts to stick to ‘fad’ diets and exercise regimes because they require a complete change of lifestyle and are too extreme to stick to in the long run. The best way to start the journey towards a healthier you is to make small changes to your lifestyle and stick to these three ‘healthy habits’…

Eat Breakfast

It was reported by the BBC recently that breakfast really could be the most important meal of the day when trying to avoid fattening foods. Scans of 21 people showed the brain was more attracted to food if breakfast was missed so people had more food at lunch. Scientists said it made losing weight challenging as missing meals made calorific food even more appealing. So by eating a healthy breakfast every day we lessen the appeal of waist-band-busting snacks later on in the day!

Increase your levels of activity

By increasing your activity by just a small amount in your everyday life you will see the pounds drop off! Get off at a slightly further away bus stop, take the stairs instead of the lift and go for a walk around the local park in your lunch break with a colleague instead of gossiping on a park bench.

If you need a bit more motivation to keep track of all of the positive changes that you are making, perhaps you should consider investing in a health tracker such as the Fitbit Ultra Wireless Tracker.

The Fitbit Ultra monitors your activity all day to provide you with real-time feedback on steps, distance, calories burned, and stairs climbed to encourage you to walk more and be more active. It wirelessly uploads your data to Fitbit.com so you can gain deeper insight into your daily or monthly fitness and sleep levels with free online graphs and charts. On Fitbit.com, you can earn fitness badges, connect with friends to share and compete on fitness goals, or join the Fitbit community for advice and encouragement. So you can get fit- one step at a time!

Drink plenty of water

Studies have shown that often when we think we are hungry we are actually feeling thirsty. By drinking plenty of water or herbal teas you will not only find your cravings subsiding but you will notice a difference in your hair, skin and nails and feel more hydrated and full of energy!

Charge your phone wirelessly from your tablet!

If you have ever found yourself needing to make a call just as your phone battery dies and wished that you could just transfer some of your battery power from your tablet and solve your problem, then this may be the gadget for you!

A company has developed technology that allows you to charge your phone from your tablet, simply by pressing them together. Fulton Innovation has utilised Qi wireless power transfer technology and created a prototype, inserting it into a Samsung Galaxy tablet. Because the addition does not affect the thinness, weight or appearance of the device, it should not be too long before the technology is introduced into new technology devices and readily available as a standard.

“This technology is ready to be added in to the standard today, so it is something we will be proposing to the Wireless Power Consortium for the next generation of products,” John Schwannecke of Fulton Innovation told ABC News,

However, this technology is not available yet and it is important to make sure that you make a contingency for if your phone runs out of power in an emergency. This Universal Barrel Charger includes a range of tips for use with most handsets including Micro USB. It provides you with an extra 2.5 hours of talk time, all from one AA battery that can be replaced as many times as you need. Best of all it’s compact size means that it is fully portable, and small enough to keep in your handbag or car glove compartment so you will never find yourself without power when you need it most!

How to avoid getting your phone eaten by an elephant!

Whether you are a fan of the iphone or not, you can probably agree that, while it looks chic and high-tech, it doesn’t look all that tasty. Well one elephant that is the star of the latest viral online video would disagree! In the video the hungry elephant can be seen grabbing the phone from the hands of a girl who is filming her friend feeding the cheeky animal and devouring it. It seemed that its anodized aluminium shell helped it slip straight down though, as the phone is later seen ringing, then being retrieved from a heap of dung.

Now, whether this video is a hoax or not, it still seems that the girl had it coming, waving her expensive phone in the face of an unpredictable wild animal! “I would never be so foolish” I hear you say… But would you? Hundreds of people have their phones taken straight out of their hands by opportunistic thieves every week. Mobile phone theft has risen by a staggering 25% in the last three years with, on average, 264 phone robberies reported to the police every day.

People on their phones in busy public places are easy targets and often find them snatched away before they even knew someone was approaching.

Pickpocketing is the most common form of mobile phone theft. You can also use it to locate missing handset/tablet by pressing the button on the tag for 10 seconds and, as long as it is in range, the alert will activate on your phone or tablet allowing you to pinpoint its exact location.

It may not protect your phone from hungry elephants but it will give you the upper hand against an opportunistic pickpocket!

Sony unveils waterproof phone!

Have you ever dropped your phone into the bath or worse, down the toilet? Well you wouldn’t be alone!

Sony’s Xperia Z was unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas and the company claims that it will work under water for up to 30 minutes. It will work in the shower, survive a dunking in the toilet and can be given a quick rinse under the tap if it gets wet.

"If you want to want to sit in the bath and watch an HD movie this is the device for you," Steve Walker, of Sony, said.

Sony's stand at the Consumer Electronics Show, which opens today, has an Xperia Z attached to a robotic arm that repeatedly lowers it into a bowl of water.

In addition to a battery 'stamina mode', which Sony claims will double battery life, and 'one-touch' connectivity that links to the phone to a hifi, say, with one tap, the Xperia Z is also water resistant and dust-proof.

The Sony Xperia Z is only water resistant up to one metre so you won’t want to take it diving with you, but if you have ever found yourself searching desperately for a cure for a waterlogged phone after a little slip up, the Xperia Z, that will be available later this year, could be the phone for you!

Get a promotion in 2013!

2013 is here and this is the year that you are going to take control of your life, get that promotion and be the successful, confident person that you know you are meant to be! Right? The pressure of New Years Resolutions is often overwhelming… Where do you start on this epic new career path? Sometimes it can be too daunting and by the February the 1st you are back to the old routine, getting on with it and keeping your head down with a renewed sense of failure at never progressing…

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Small changes can build up to big promotions!

It is a well known fact that first impressions count- and rightly or wrongly- much of someone’s first impression of you is gathered from what you are wearing.  Which is why it is so important to project the right image when you are trying to get a new job or promotion. Here are some tips that could make a difference between promotion or demotion…

Stick to well-fitting basics in neutral colours that can easily be mixed, matched and accessorised to make different outfits.

Tailoring should be well fitting but not skin-tight and hemlines should be to the knee.

Cleavage on show is always a no-no, as are sheer blouses.

Jewellery should be simple and never noisy- stand up and shake your arms- if it jingles, take it off!

Finishing touches are important. Get your roots done regularly (if you dye your hair) and keep your nails neat. Your shoes should always be clean.

Your accessories say a lot about you- a scuffed old phone doesn’t project a very professional image. Invest in a smart leather phone case like the Fenice Black Prada iphone cover and you will look super-chic answering that phone call offering you your high-flying new job!

Make 2013 the year you take control of your blood pressure!

According to the British Heart foundation, high blood pressure is just one of the risk factors for developing heart and circulatory disease, along with high cholesterol, diabetes and other lifestyle factors.

As many as 5 million people in the UK are walking around, undiagnosed, with high blood pressure. The only way to know whether you have high blood pressure is to have it measured. Everyone should know their blood pressure. The British Heart foundation recommends that everyone over 40 gets their blood pressure taken by a nurse or doctor as part of a health check to assess their risk for getting heart and circulatory disease.

Should you find that you do have a high blood pressure, don’t panic, there are not only medications to keep it under control, but easy lifestyle changes will make a big difference.

Making sure that you are physically active and maintain a healthy diet will help you to control your blood pressure. Making sure that you get enough sleep and stay in control of your stress levels can also help.

Many of the people who end up hospitalised as a result of more serious medical conditions caused by high blood pressure, were not even aware that they had a problem until it was too late.

Being aware of your blood pressure is extremely important, especially if you are over 65, have a family history or are overweight- it could even save your life!

There are plenty of perfectly functional and reasonably priced monitors available to buy in chemist and many doctors’ surgeries offer a free blood pressure monitoring service. Ask your GP for more information.

However if you want a state of the art monitor and wish to track your blood pressure at the touch of a button then you need to look no further than this bloodpressure monitor that is compatible with your ipad, ipod or iphoneBased on the iOS operating system and Bluetooth technology, you can test, track and share your blood pressure results wirelessly with your iPod touch: iPhone and iPad. The monitor is integrated on the arm cuff and works with the Free App. It can even work out averages to see if the chances that you have made to your lifestyle or any medication that you are on is having a positive effect. This information can then be sent to family members or caregivers at the tough of a button.

Make 2013 the year that you take control of your health!

New Years Eve calls getting earlier

The Daily Mail reported recently that over the past few years the trend for sending ‘Happy New Year’ texts has been getting increasingly earlier, with the majority of revelers sending greetings to their loved ones well before the chime of midnight. In 2011, according to research carried out by Tesco Mobile, traffic peaked at 7.02pm.

This is partly down to the trend of 'broadcast text messaging' – sending the same text to your whole address book. It may also be because of the recession. People are opting for smaller celebrations with a lot staying at home to save money. As a result they're not staying up so late, so the calls and texts are getting earlier and earlier.
Fear of forgetting to call at midnight and concerns over whether loved ones will already be in bed at 12am also played a part in the trend for getting well wishing done by early and by text.
The person we are most likely to call hasn't changed though. When it comes to that one person we must wish a Happy New Year, eight in ten of those surveyed said when it came to New Year well wishing, it was their mum they called, with dad following in second place.
Simon Groves, Chief Marketing Officer, Tesco Mobile said: 'It seems our customers are doing away with the traditional midnight call and are instead texting their Happy New Year messages earlier.
'We have seen this pattern form over the last few years – no doubt in part to the recession meaning festivities have become more low key affairs at home, so revelers are likely to be hitting the sack earlier.'
Who did you call this New Years Eve? Did you send round a group text or were your texts personal and thoughtful?
