Police to target mobile phone drivers in new safety campaign

-->

A police campaign has been launched to discourage motorists from using their mobile phones while driving. Since February 2007 the penalty for using phone whilst driving has been three penalty points and £60 fine, but despite this, it remains one of the most frequently committed offences.

Chief Inspector Darren Wareing, from the North Wales force's roads policing unit, told BBC news that there were real dangers involved.

"The consequences of a momentary lapse in concentration when driving can be devastating to road users and pedestrians," he said.
"As soon as a driver answers a call, looks at their phone to text or read a message, their concentration is affected.
"As a result they cannot give their full attention to the road and risk becoming involved in a collision."

It is a shame that with the gadgets and phone accessories available today that these accidents continue to destroy lives. By simply installing a hands free device in your car you could be preventing an accident that could not only cost you your driving licence but your (or someone else’s) life.

There are wide range of Bluetooth hands-free devices available for the conscientious driver. They range from purely functional to super stylish, with many able to connect to multiple devices. They usually connect automatically as soon as the pared handset is in range so once it is set up you don't even need to think about it, and with voice recognition technology, you can answer your phone without taking your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. There really is no excuse anymore!
