Colour your mood with your accessories

Expressions like “green with envy,” “seeing red,” or “feeling blue”, are commonly used in everyday conversations to express an emotion and in fact there is real evidence that colours can have a noticeable affect on our mood.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia conducted extensive tests to establish whether cognitive performance varied when people saw red or blue. Subjects performed tasks with words or images displayed against red, blue or neutral backgrounds on computer screens.

Red groups did better on tests of recall and attention to detail, like remembering words or checking spelling and punctuation. Blue groups did better on tests requiring imagination, like inventing creative uses for a brick or creating toys from shapes.

Another study in 2008 carried out by Andrew Elliot of the University of Rochester showed that men considered women shown in photographs with red backgrounds or wearing red to be more attractive than women with other colours.

Colours have been used as therapy in many ancient cultures including the ancient Egyptians and Chinese and are still used holistically today. So how can we utilize colour to our advantage? Here are some ways to accessorise with colour that will say a lot about your personality and even boost your mood…

Red is the colour of passion. It denotes strong feelings and grabs attention. Red could be the perfect colour for you if you are looking to stand out in the crowd or increase a certain someone’s pulse rate! Choose a bright pink hue of red for a more playful and sweet shade of passion, such as this Poppy Pink Fenice ipad cover
Black is the colour of authority and power. It can often denote mystery and is timelessly chic. Vamp up your outfit with this Fenice Prada Black iphone 4 cover
Blue is tranquil and relaxing. It can also stimulate creativity. Blue is also thought to be the colour of loyalty so is an excellent choice to wear to a job interview. Give off the vibes of trustworthy dependability with this Fenice denim blue ipad cover.
Orange is uplifting and zingy. It is great for stimulating action and enthusiasm and relieving lethargic periods of inactivity. This juicy orange Fenice iphone 4 cover would get you moving even on the coldest of Monday mornings!

Self-healing smartphone screens are coming soon!

The BBC reported today that in the near future, self-healing materials may make the cracked smartphone screen a thing of the past!

In 2002 a study led by Scott White from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign saw huge leaps and bounds in the development of this field. The study infused a plastic-like poymer with microscopic capsules containing a liquid agent. When the material was cracked open, the capsules ruptured, releasing the healing agent. When the agent made contact with a catalyst embedded in the material, a chemical reaction bonded the two faces of the cracks together, recovering up to 75% of the polymers original toughness.

The development of this technology could not only mean terrific improvements in the technology available to the military, but also to the humble smartphone user like you or I!

However, before you get too excited, the technology is not available in smartphones just yet- so if you want to protect your smartphone screen from cracks and scrapes, it is probably best to invest in a protective cover such as the Fenice PRADA Black iphone case. This case fits securely onto your iphone and its robust yet stylish design is versatile enough to use everyday. It also comes in several different colours to suit your style or mood- now you can’t say that about a self-healing screen!

Christmas Party Countdown Part 1

There are 8 weeks until Christmas and already the invitations to parties, reunions and annual get-togethers are rolling in. While it may be too soon to worry about what to wear, it is not too soon to start preparing yourself for the party season. If you are to avoid the sudden panic the night before your work’s Christmas ‘do’ when you realise that the zip of your trusty old little black dress just will not do up, then you need to step away from the Halloween goodies and get moving!

If you have a few pounds to shed before the party season begins then don’t panic. By making only a few changes to your lifestyle you could be the belle of the ball come Christmas!

Be realistic- you are not going to shed 5 stone before Christmas by drinking vinegar and having ice baths! Fad diets are difficult to stick to and can leave you feeling (and looking) worse than when you started. Yoyo dieting is one of the worst contributors to long-term weight gain. Eating healthily and getting more exercise really is the best way to maintain a healthy weight- sorry, but there really is no magic lotion or potion!

Before you start trying to lose weight, weigh yourself- it might not be as bad as you thought! Keeping track of how your weight changes can also help you track your progress and see the rewards of all your hard work! You can of course do this using a pen and notebook, but if you like to keep up to date with the latest gadgets and your smartphone is the centre of your life, then why not invest in a gadget to do all the hard work for you. The Fitbit Aria Wi-FiSmart Scale measures your weight, body fat percentage and body mass index (BMI) to provide a full picture of your weight trends. The Wi-Fi enabled scale lets you set goals, track your progress effortlessly, and stay motivated each and every day. Your stats automatically upload to your Fitbit dashboard where you can get a more comprehensive view of your health and fitness and track your eating and exercise habits so you can work out trends in your weight loss (or gain) and work out what really works for you!

Keep checking back for Christmas Party Countdown Part 2…

Three uses for a video baby monitor that have nothing to do with babies!

Whether your baby is all grown up and no longer needs watching, or you just like to keep up to date with all of the latest gadgets, here are three exciting uses for a video baby monitor that have nothing to do with babies...

Security
Whether you are worried for the security of your home, you think someone is up to no good, or you simply want to see which of your housemates keeps eating your Brie, then a video baby monitor could be the perfect solution to your security problem!
Invest in a monitor that has a motion and sound censor, such as the iHealth baby monitor and have complete peace of mind. The iHealth baby monitor connects to your iphone, ipod or ipad wherever you have an Internet connection and will alert with a flashing display and customized alarm if the motion or sound sensors are activated.

Train a naughty puppy
We have all heard horror stories about peoples new puppies taking up (and in some cases eating!) the carpet while they are out or chewing up the furniture while they are in the bathroom! With a video baby monitor you can keep an eye on an untrained pup and see what they get up to when your back is turned! With a monitor like the iHealth baby monitor you even have a two-way audio connection so can reprimand them and stop them I their tracks even if you are miles away!

Set up your wildlife watch
Think you have an urban fox living in your garage or that your patio is being visited by a curious hedgehog at night? Why not set up a video baby monitor that will alert you of any movements and enable you to watch your furry visitors up-close without scaring them away. Who knows what you may see!

How to make your bonfire night go off with a bang!

-->
Whether you are holding your own bonfire party or attending a public firework display, here are three tips to make sure your night goes off with a bang…

Keep warm
You are more than likely going to be outside most, if not all of the time at a bonfire party, so it is essential that you wrap up warm to avoid looking like an extra in the end scenes of Titanic! But comfortable doesn’t have to mean unstylish. Accessorise your winter warmers with a cute hat and scarf set and you will not only evoke jealousy over how snug and cosy you look but you will have them wondering how you manage to look so effortlessly chic in freezing cold drizzle!

Make memories
Ditch the standard old digital camera that you toted around with you last year- desperately trying to push the button at just the right moment to capture the brief bursts of fireworks- and get your hands on a Bubblescope.

The Bubblescope is a remarkable little video and still camera that attaches to your iphone or ipad and captures 360 degrees of your surroundings at the touch of a button. You can then upload your videos and pictured onto Bubblepix.com and choose the angle at which you view it from. You can watch it back endlessly, changing your viewing angle each time so you never have to miss a second of any event!

Stay safe
This may seem like an obvious one, but last year hundreds of people ended up in hospital with burns from improper handling of bonfires and fireworks- many of them children. It is important that when setting up for a firework display that you follow the safety information on the fireworks themselves as well as following these rules-

. Store fireworks safely in a closed box, somewhere cool and dry. Only buy fireworks that have a safety mark BS 7114

. Be prepared with a bucket of water nearby in case of an emergency or to put out sparklers.

. Let fireworks off one at a time. Only one person (only ever an adult) should be in charge of lighting the fireworks to avoid any confusion or accidents.

. Light the firework at arms length using a sfety lighter or fuse wick and stand back immediately after lighting. If it doesn’t go off DO NOT go back to it- it could still be live and go off unexpectedly. At the end of the night douse it in water and bury it in the ground.

. Keep pets indoors and make sure that all windows and doors are kept shut.

. Never give sparklers to children under five and make sure anyone holding a sparkler is wearing gloves. Put them straight into a bucket of water after they go out.

. Never put a firework in your pocket or throw it. It is illegal to throw fireworks with a maximum penalty of £5,000!

Three ways to stay in control of your blood pressure

-->
Known as the ’silent killer’, high blood pressure affects at least 25% of adults in the UK and many of them are not even aware that they have it. If left untreated, high blood pressure increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. It is recommended that you go to your doctor for a check up at least every five years and more often if you are over 65, have a family history of hypertension or are overweight.

Luckily there are plenty of small changes that you can make to your lifestyle to ensure that you stay healthy and avoid the issues associated with high blood pressure. Here are three top tips…

Keep an eye on your diet
Although it probably goes without saying, maintaining a healthy weight and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables is one of the best ways to stave off not only high blood pressure but to stay fit and healthy generally. It is also recommended that you limit the amount of alcohol, caffeine and salt that consume.

Play Football
In a study carried out at the University of Exeter, it was discovered that football is likely to help those at risk of having a high blood pressure to improve their fitness, normalise their blood pressure and reduce their risk of stroke.

Football training was found to prevent cardiovascular disease in middle-aged men with high blood pressure according to the research published in the latest edition of the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

After six months of training, three out of four men who took part in the study had blood pressure within the normal, healthy range!

Stay aware
High blood pressure is an easily controllable and treatable condition, however many of the people who end up hospitalised as a result of more serious medical conditions caused by high blood pressure, were not even aware that they had a problem until it was too late.

Being aware of your blood pressure is extremely important, especially if you are over 65, have a family history or are overweight- it could even save your life!

There are plenty of perfectly functional and reasonably priced monitors available to buy in chemist and many doctors’ surgeries offer a free blood pressure monitoring service. Ask your GP for more information.

However if you want a state of the art monitor and wish to track your blood pressure at the touch of a button then you need to look no further than this blood pressure monitor that is compatible with your ipad, ipod or iphone.

Based on the iOS operating system and Bluetooth technology, you can test, track and share your blood pressure results wirelessly with your iPod touch: iPhone and iPad. The monitor is integrated on the arm cuff and works with the Free App. It can even work out averages to see if the chances that you have made to your lifestyle or any medication that you are on is having a positive effect. This information can then be sent to family members or caregivers at the tough of a button.

The best defence against more serious health problems is to be aware and stay in control of your own body!

Three ways to keep yourself and your smartphone safe

Smartphone and tablet thefts are increasing with alarming regularity and it is all the more important to be vigilant and prepared to stop yourself falling victim to these crimes. Your smartphone is an encyclopedia of personal information that it is not only inconvenient for you to lose but can pose a serious security risk to other areas of your life. The key to staying safe is to be aware of your surroundings; be vigilant to threats; be prepared should the worst happen. Here are three apps, tips and gadgets that will help you do just that...

PanicGuard is a smartphone app turns your phone into a personal safety device. Simply turn it on if you feel you are entering a potentially dangerous situation to enable advanced tracking in real-time GPS. One shake of your handset sends an alert with your exact location and video/audio evidence to either your selected emergency contact or Crimestoppers where the experienced staff will review the data to verify the alert and call you back. If you don’t answer or there is evidence to suggest there is a threat to life, they contact the local police in order to get help quickly.

International Mobile Equipment Identity Number
Don’t make it easy for phone thieves! Your phone has a unique 15 digit International Mobile Equipment Identity number. Type *#06# into your mobile phone to view it. Register this number with your service provider and if your phone is stolen, they'll be able to bar its use.

Mi-Zone 2-way proximity alarm
Mi-Zone is a Bluetooth 2-way alarm system that helps protects your valuables.   It is a unique device that you can attach to anything you consider valuable or worth protecting and does not even need a mobile phone signal for it to work. You phone alerts with a flashing alert on your screen and an audio alarm as soon as your belongings move outside your defined security zone.  You can then activate the 'locator' to pinpoint the exact location of your missing item with the help of a beeping visual display. Don’t let thieves get away with it!

Three easy ways to lose weight

Summer has ended and the threat of shorts, revealing tops and bikinis has been removed for another year. Halloween treats have lined the supermarket shelves for weeks now and we are craving stodgy comfort food to keep us warm as the chilly weather sets in. So naturally we have noticed our jeans are feeling a bit tighter and our belts going out a notch (or two!) However, you don’t need to succumb to the inevitable weight gain of winter. Little changes in your lifestyle could make all the difference- without leaving you feeling hungry and deprived! Here are three easy ways to fight that winter flab!

Eat Breakfast

It was reported by the BBC recently that breakfast really could be the most important meal of the day when trying to avoid fattening foods. Scans of 21 people showed the brain was more attracted to food if breakfast was missed so people had more food at lunch. Scientists said it made losing weight challenging as missing meals made calorific food even more appealing. So by eating a healthy breakfast every day we lessen the appeal of waist-band-busting snacks later on in the day!

Increase your levels of activity

By increasing your activity by just a small amount in your everyday life you will see the pounds drop off! Get off at a slightly further away bus stop, take the stairs instead of the lift and go for a walk around the local park in your lunch break with a colleague instead of gossiping on a park bench.

If you need a bit more motivation to keep track of all of the positive changes that you are making, perhaps you should consider investing in a health tracker such as the Fitbit Ultra Wireless Tracker.

The Fitbit Ultra monitors your activity all day to provide you with real-time feedback on steps, distance, calories burned, and stairs climbed to encourage you to walk more and be more active. It wirelessly uploads your data to Fitbit.com so you can gain deeper insight into your daily or monthly fitness and sleep levels with free online graphs and charts. On Fitbit.com, you can earn fitness badges, connect with friends to share and compete on fitness goals, or join the Fitbit community for advice and encouragement. So you can get fit- one step at a time!

Drink plenty of water

Studies have shown that often when we think we are hungry we are actually feeling thirsty. By drinking plenty of water or herbal teas you will not only find your cravings subsiding but you will notice a difference in your hair, skin and nails and feel more hydrated and full of energy!

Top five benefits of a video baby monitor

-->

As any parent will tell you, a baby monitor is an indispensable piece of kit for providing peace of mind and the freedom to move out of earshot of your little one. Over the last few years the improvements in the technology available to baby monitor manufacturers has made it ever easier to keep an eye on your baby with high tech monitors. So what are the benefits of investing in a video monitor over the standard audio monitors?

Here are our top five reasons to opt for a video monitor…

With a state of the art video monitor you can connect your smartphone, computer or tablet to the monitors video feed. This allows you to see a live video feed of your baby wherever you are. This is especially important for parents who work away and don’t want to miss out on their little ones milestones. You can even take snapshots throughout the day- so you never miss out on cherished memories.

You can use your video monitor to keep an eye on older children while they do their homework or play while you see to the baby.

Video monitors with two-way audio allows you to comfort toddlers while they get used to sleeping alone without being in the same room. Sometimes all they need is a soothing word and a bit of reassurance that you are nearby!

A video monitor allows you to watch your children while they are ill so that you can get to them quickly should they need you in a hurry. You will be able to see if they get out of bed or are distressed in any way- sometimes just the reassurance that you are watching is enough to comfort them.

As any new parent will know, it is hard to resist going to check on your baby every five minutes- just to make sure they are still okay. With a video monitor you can check on them without the risk of waking them up!

If you are looking for a premium video monitor then the iHealth Baby Monitor offers everything that you could possibly want in a baby monitor.

It transfers your baby's image and sound to up to 4 iOS devices simultaneously whenever you can connect to internet.  A rotatable lens gives you a 360% horizontal and 150% vertical visual angle that can be controlled by simply sweeping your iOS device, so if your baby moves out of the camera eye you easily reposition it. It also offers you 2-way audio and 1-way video connection and alerts you automatically when baby is crying or moving. The peace of mind that comes with being able to see your baby 24 hours a day is invaluable!

Get fit - one step at a time!

You were inspired by the Olympics this Summer to start a new fitness regime and it started off so well; you were running before work and getting to the gym at least three nights a week. But once the bunting was down and the autumn rain set in you lost momentum.

There is no need to feel guilty and as any personal trainer or health professional will tell you, it is best to make small changes to your everyday routine - that will eventually add up to big changes in your health!

Try to increase your number of steps per day; park further away from your office, walk your kids to school or get off the bus a stop earlier. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator or lift will make a big difference too!

If you need a bit more motivation to keep track of all of the positive changes that you are making, perhaps you should consider investing in a health tracker such as the Fitbit Ultra WirelessTracker.
